It’s always good to push yourself artistically, but when you’ve created a fan base, the need to remain in your own sound factors into your creations. So it makes sense for the Pet Shop Boys to go to current UK hit factory Xenomania to perhaps bring a freshness to their music without sacrificing their signature sound. If this first single from their new album Yes is any indication, then the team-up is a rousing success. Set to a marching beat, “Love Etc.” is classic tongue-in-cheek irony in its look at relationships, but the chanting chorus is a new garment upon the body of the PSB sound. Long-time fans may be taken aback at first. Give it a try though. It’s insanely catchy and proves that after two decades of making music Pet Shop Boys can still make a singable single.
