Pet Shop Boys: "Love Etc."

It’s always good to push yourself artistically, but when you’ve created a fan base, the need to remain in your own sound factors into your creations. So it makes sense for the Pet Shop Boys to go to current UK hit factory Xenomania to perhaps bring a freshness to their music without sacrificing their signature sound. If this first single from their new album Yes is any indication, then the team-up is a rousing success. Set to a marching beat, “Love Etc.” is classic tongue-in-cheek irony in its look at relationships, but the chanting chorus is a new garment upon the body of the PSB sound. Long-time fans may be taken aback at first. Give it a try though. It’s insanely catchy and proves that after two decades of making music Pet Shop Boys can still make a singable single.

  1. The album was just released here in the UK… I like it a lot. I got the version with a bonus CD which is well worth the extra money, if it hits that way stateside when it gets released there.

  2. I like it.

I was a HUGE PSB fan back in the 90’s and early 00’s. I couldn’t get into Release though, and I only gave Fundamental one listen before shelving it. That doesn’t mean I consider Fundamental a bad album, but it just wasn’t what I was in the mood for at the time it came out.

PSB are often dismissed as just another 80’s pop group, but I always thought their music contained a lot of layers and depth. I’ll give the new album a chance when it comes out. Hopefully it will reignite my PSB fanboy status.
