“High Flying Bird” is the last track on Elton John’s excellent Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player and a befitting ending to a song cycle about nostalgia and loss. It seemed that Bernie Taupin was going through some sort of hard spot in his life and Elton wrote these beautiful, melancholy melodies to fit them perfectly. Even “Crocodile Rock” was sad in its own way, but “High Flying Bird” always brings up feelings of emptiness that was once filled by love. Truly extraordinary in its execution, this was meant to be a tribute to Van Morisson’s style.
