End of Summer, 1987. I was graduating from Navy boot camp. It was a hard time for me. I believe I was one of two people who didn’t have anyone show up for it and it didn’t help that the Navy band members who were graduating as well were playing Jesus Christ Superstar. My parents had the box-set of the album made before it was launched into a stage musical. Yeah, I just found that out, too. It was a dark brown cardboard box with two vinyl records and this huge booklet inside. I used to open it just to smell the paper product. (You did it, too!) It was played a lot in our house when it first came out, so you can imagine how much more homesick I was when the band started playing “Superstar.” Still, I look back at it as a moment when I grew stronger as a person.
Also, I never knew the words, so in later years I’d sing “Jesus Christ/Superstar/I do not know what the lyrics are” every time it came on.
